Section of Cancer Epidemiology & Statistics

Yong-Bing Xiang, male, born in April 1964, MD, MSc, as a Professor of Epidemiology at the Shanghai Cancer Institute since 2000, and, mentor for Master & PhD students at the School of Public Health of Fudan University and the Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine. He has about 30 years of experience with cancer statistics/cancer registration, cancer survival studies, case-control studies and cohort studies, as well as cancer control activities in Shanghai. Since the early 1990s, I have been involved in many population-based case-control and cohort studies for common cancers (e.g. cancers of lung, liver, bladder, endometrium, colon/rectum, stomach, and breast), collaborating with US-based researchers for over 20 years. He has authored or co-authored approximately 155 publications in peer-reviewed Chinese journals and 265 publications in peer-reviewed English journals on cancer and chronic diseases.

He has been the sub-contract PI at the Shanghai Cancer Institute for the Shanghai Men’s Health Study (SMHS), and the sub-contract Co-Investigator at the Shanghai Cancer Institute for the Shanghai Women’s Health Study (SWHS) since 2001. For the SMHS, he has primary responsibility for overseeing all operations in the Shanghai field, including the initial pilot study, study design, data management, biospecimen storage, quality control, active follow-up, passive follow-up/record linkage, statistical analysis, and manuscript preparation. Long-term contributions have been made coordinating with local community-based hospitals and district offices of public health. All of these efforts are aimed to get high response rates in baseline survey and annual home visits for follow-up of all participants in both cohorts in the Shanghai field. He was also responsible for conducting the field work of some specific research activities within the SWHS and the SMHS, for example, validation studies of the food frequency questionnaire and the physical activity questionnaire.

Moreover, using data from both cohorts and other epidemiological studies done in collaboration with US-based researchers, he has guided about 30 students for their masters and PhD programs since 2000. In 2005-2007 and 2010-2014, two young fellows from Indonesia, one master student from France and two MD/PhD candidate students from USA finished their training projects under his supervision and mentoring.
